Safari FAQs
Straight answers on costs, timing, health requirements and how this site is funded.
How does Safari Hotels make money?
Safari Hotels is reader-supported. If you book a hotel, flight or tour after clicking one of our links, we may earn a commission through the Travelpayouts network at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide which lodges we list or the order they appear in.
Are the prices shown on the site the prices I will pay?
No. Every figure here is an indicative rate in US dollars per person per night, published so you can compare lodges at a glance. Live prices move with season, availability and room type, so always confirm the current rate on the booking partner's site before you book.
When is the best time to go on safari?
Dry months usually give the easiest game viewing, because vegetation thins and animals gather at water. That means roughly June to October in Tanzania, July to October for the migration in Kenya's Maasai Mara, and May to September in South Africa. The when to go page breaks down each destination month by month.
How many nights do I need for a safari?
Most first trips run four to seven nights on the ground, plus travel days. A Tanzania northern circuit covering Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti usually needs six to nine nights, while a single-reserve trip in the Maasai Mara or Greater Kruger works well at three to four nights.
Can I compare lodges before I book?
Yes. Tick the compare box on any lodge card to add it to your shortlist, then open the comparison page to see up to four lodges side by side, including style, region, facilities and indicative nightly prices.
Do I need a visa, vaccinations or malaria medication?
Requirements depend on your passport and the parks you plan to visit, and both visa rules and health advice change. Check official government guidance for entry requirements and speak to a travel clinic well before departure. Our travel guide lists the documents and health checks to arrange.
Are there malaria-free safari options?
Yes. In South Africa, Madikwe, Pilanesberg and the Eastern Cape private reserves sit in malaria-free areas, which is why many families choose them. Eastern Cape reserves also pair easily with a Garden Route drive.
Can I book flights and tours as well as lodging?
Yes. The booking page links to hotel searches for each destination, flight searches to the main airport, and safari tours and day trips, all through our booking partners.
